James Eastman was a soldier
of the French and Indian war and served in the Revolution. He and
his wife are remembered as they went from house to house among the
farmers, when advanced in life, to dress the crop of flax. His house
was upon a slight rise of ground in a narrow field, now in the woods
under the hill below the buildings of Artemas Richardson, and his
lonely grave may be seen in the forest on a hill-side, some distance
from where he lived. His age cannot be ascertained.
Old Eastman Place (burial ground)
James Eastman, Revolutionary War, Enlisted January 23, 1780;
discharged May 1, 1780; Private, Col. John Allan's Eastern Indian
Department, Service at Machias, Maine (information from WPA survey
card); died November 13, 1833, age 82 years. (Pvt., NH Line Col.
Poor's Regt., Rev War, 1750-1833)
James Eastman was a soldier of the French and Indian Wars and of the
Revolution. He and his wife went from "house to house among the
farmers, when advanced in life, to dress the flax." He came from
Danvers, Mass., and settled on Hiram Hill, where he built upon a
slight rise of ground in a narrow field near the Richardson farm.
His isolated grave, once marked with field stones, is located on a
little hillock in the forest. His widow and children deserted the
lonely spot after his death. A government marker has been placed
upon his grave in recent years. James Eastman married Sally
Whitehorn, and they were the parents of Elizabeth, Lucy Ann, John
W., Henry, Amie, Ruth H. and Sarah Eastman.
